“There is no tool for more effective development of women’s empowerment.”

(former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan)

Experts argue that women are considered nurturing by nature, which is why women entrepreneurs turn to social entrepreneurship, as their work is an extension of how they see the world. Despite the challenges faced such as access to finance, information, training and corporate networks together with family concerns, women around the world are now actively involved in creating social enterprises that have a social and / or environmental impact .

A great example is Ms. Nonhlanhla Joye, the winner of the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2017. Her social enterprise, Umgibe Farming Organics is an ecological, organic and income-generating agriculture system that caters to basic farmers from sub districts – economic of South Africa. The project uses an innovative vegetable cultivation mechanism using recycled bags suspended on a wooden support structure.

This is the business of an entrepreneur who started her job after a cancer diagnosis in 2014 because of her inability to provide for her family after her diagnosis. Since its recognition at Impact2 2017, its start-up is now involved in the training of community members and therefore not only has helped create job opportunities for farmers, but has also had an environmental impact by minimizing the use of water in their agricultural techniques and completely avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
